Dental Hygienist: The Job Description

Thursday, June 27, 2013

When you visit the general dentist is Oklahoma City, the person who comes in first and looks at your teeth before the dentist comes in is the dental hygienist. This person gets to work with a dentist without needing to attend all the school that a dentist needs to. If you have ever considered working in a dental office, this may be the position for you. The outlook for this career is great, and you may find that it is the perfect job for you.

Training and Education To become a dental hygienist in an office, a person must first attend a school of dental hygiene. To get into these schools requires only a high school diploma or a GED. This college program usually runs for two years. At the completion of this education, the person will then be required to pass a written and clinical exam, both of which require much studying. This test will be taken in the state where the person wishes to work. The passing of these tests will result in licensure, and then the person must find an office in which to work. Schools will often help with job placement. If the hygienist desires to work at a school or in research, a relevant four-year bachelor’s degree is required instead.

The Job Description If a person chooses to work in a dentist’s office, he or she will spend their time assisting the dentist in anything that they are approved to do. Much of this includes looking inside patients’ mouths at first and giving the teeth a preliminary cleaning to prepare the patient for the dentist. Some of this treatment includes fluoride rinses and other sealants applied to the teeth. A hygienist can take and develop x-rays of patients that the dentist will look at to discover any issues. Additional work can include some receptionist work or teaching patients any advice they may need for better dental care. In general, a hygienist must be clean, precise, and friendly to any patients. They are the face of the dental office and must reflect the work that the general dentist in Oklahoma City does.
